Where to stay in Martinique: practical guide by area and traveler profile
Where to stay in Martinique: north, south, or center?
Choosing where to stay in Martinique depends above all on what you are looking for on this Caribbean island. The territory is divided into areas with radically different atmospheres, and choosing the right place to stay will determine the whole experience of your stay.
The south is home to picture-perfect beaches: Sainte-Anne, Le Diamant, Les Anses d'Arlet. This is Martinique's ultimate seaside destination, with turquoise waters and fine sand. The north reveals a wilder and more authentic side: tropical forest, Mount Pelée, unspoiled fishing villages. The center, around Fort-de-France, offers an immersion in Creole culture but remains far from the beautiful beaches.
If you have two weeks in Martinique, the ideal plan is to split your nights between several areas to fully enjoy the island's diversity. For a one-week stay, it's best to choose a strategic base such as Trois-Îlets, which is ideally located for exploring all of Martinique.
Sleeping in southern Martinique: beaches and a festive atmosphere
The south of Martinique naturally attracts travelers looking to relax and swim. Between Sainte-Anne, Sainte-Luce, Le Diamant, and Les Trois-Îlets, you will find the island's most beautiful beaches and a wide variety of accommodation options.
Les Trois-Îlets and Anse Mitan: the best compromise
Located opposite Fort-de-France on the Caribbean coast, this area offers the perfect balance between accessibility and a seaside setting. Anse Mitan boasts fine sandy beaches lined with coconut trees, calm waters ideal for swimming, and all amenities within easy reach: restaurants, shops, and water sports.
This is where our resort, the Bambou Resort, is located, a family-run establishment right on the waterfront since 1960. The area is just 20 minutes from Fort-de-France by shuttle boat from the pier, 25 minutes from Aimé Césaire Airport, and within easy reach of both the north and south of the island.
Les Trois-Îlets is an ideal starting point for visiting the Maison de la Canne, the Pottery Village, the Pagerie, or taking a trip to the nearby Anses d'Arlet. The golf course is only a 5-minute drive away.
Sainte-Anne: a paradise of white sandy beaches
At the southern tip of the island, Sainte-Anne is home to the famous Salines beach, considered one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean Sea. The Grande Anse des Salines stretches its white sand beneath coconut trees in a picture-postcard setting. The village retains its authentic charm with its market and Creole restaurants.
Accommodation options mainly consist of seasonal rentals, cottages, and bed and breakfasts. Hotels are rarer here than in Trois-Îlets. Plan to rent a car, as public transportation is limited in this part of the island.
Le Diamant: breathtaking view of the legendary rock
Dominated by its famous volcanic rock rising out of the sea, Le Diamant offers a more peaceful atmosphere than Les Trois-Îlets. The large bay of Le Diamant stretches 4 kilometers of sand facing the Caribbean Sea, with a panoramic view of Morne Larcher.
You will find charming accommodations, often villas or bungalows with terraces and sea views. The location is particularly suited to couples seeking romance and spectacular sunsets over Diamond Rock.
Les Anses d'Arlet: an authentic Creole village
This small fishing village has managed to preserve its authenticity despite the influx of tourists. Anse Dufour and Anse Noire are among the best snorkeling spots on the island, where you can see turtles and tropical fish in turquoise waters.
The accommodation options remain modest: a few cottages, bed and breakfasts, and rentals. Perfect for one or two nights if you want to experience life in a charming Martinican village.
Sainte-Luce: between beaches and authenticity
Less touristy than Sainte-Anne, Sainte-Luce has beautiful beaches and a preserved local atmosphere. There are hotel residences, rentals, and a few comfortable hotels. A good compromise for those seeking peace and quiet without straying too far from amenities.
Sleeping in northern Martinique: wild nature and authenticity
The north of Martinique reveals a radically different side of the island. Here, tropical vegetation dominates, black sand beaches follow cliffs, and Mount Pelée watches over villages untouched by mass tourism. An ideal destination for hiking and exploration enthusiasts.
Saint-Pierre: history and black sand beaches
The former capital of the island, destroyed by the eruption of 1902, Saint-Pierre fascinates visitors with its tragic history and spectacular setting. The ruins of the theater, the Cyparis dungeon, and the volcanology museum bear witness to the catastrophe. The city is slowly being reborn and offers a unique atmosphere.
The black sand beaches offer a superb experience, quite different from the south. Accommodation is limited to a few hotels and guesthouses, in a peaceful and authentic atmosphere. An ideal place for history lovers and a starting point for hiking to the island's highest point: Mount Pelée.
Le Carbet: between sea and mountains
Next to Saint-Pierre, Le Carbet offers a lush setting where the tropical forest descends to the sea. The superb Balata Garden, a botanical marvel, is nearby. The black sand beaches attract fewer tourists than those in the south, offering a welcome tranquility.
A few hotels and lodges offer accommodation in this unspoiled corner of the island, which is the ideal starting point for exploring the northern Caribbean coast and climbing Mount Pelée via marked trails.
The Caravelle Peninsula: wild and unspoiled
On the Atlantic coast, this strip of land is home to an exceptional nature reserve. Hiking trails, mangroves, the ruins of Château Dubuc, and the village of Tartane make up an authentic setting. Surf enthusiasts enjoy the Atlantic waves.
Accommodation remains scarce: mainly lodges and private rentals. La Caravelle is ideal for travelers seeking unspoiled nature and absolute tranquility, who are willing to sacrifice seaside comforts in exchange for an immersion in authentic Martinique.
Grand'Rivière: the end of the world
This fishing village located at the northern tip of the island can only be reached via a winding road through the rainforest. The atmosphere here is unique and timeless. This is the starting point for the famous trail to Anse Couleuvre, an unmissable hike through lush vegetation.
There are very few places to stay in Grand'Rivière. Instead, plan a day trip from your base in southern or central Martinique.
Sainte-Marie: unspoiled Atlantic coastline
The largest town in the North Atlantic, Sainte-Marie offers an authentic setting far from the crowds. The Saint-James Rum Museum is well worth a visit. Accommodation is limited but allows visitors to discover an unspoiled side of Martinique.
Sleeping in the center of Martinique: Creole culture and convenience
Fort-de-France, the capital, offers an immersion into Martinican life: colorful markets, Creole architecture, museums, and restaurants. It is also the island's transportation hub with its ferry terminal.
Fort-de-France: for a short stopover
Staying in Fort-de-France is convenient if you arrive late or leave early from the airport. The city offers opportunities to explore the spice market, the Schoelcher Library, and Saint Louis Cathedral. Nearby Le François is famous for its white sand beaches.
On the other hand, the beautiful beaches are far away. Fort-de-France is more suitable for one or two nights than for a longer beach vacation. The hotel offerings are concentrated in classic urban establishments that are comfortable but do not offer sea views.
What type of accommodation should you choose in Martinique?
The island offers a wide variety of accommodations, from luxury resorts to homestays. Your choice will depend on your budget, your expectations, and the composition of your travel group.
Hotels and resorts: services and tranquility
Hotels in Martinique generally offer swimming pools, restaurants, and sometimes spas. They are the ideal choice for a carefree stay, with reception services and concierge services available to organize your excursions and help you discover the island.
At Bambou Resort, we combine the advantages of a resort (three restaurants including Bòdlanmè facing the sea, Le Cocon spa, swimming pools, entertainment) with the warm atmosphere of a family-run establishment since 1960. Our boutique hotel Culture Créole, reserved for adults, offers a more intimate atmosphere with its infinity pool facing the bay.
Villas and bungalows: space and independence
For large families or groups of friends, renting a villa with a private pool is an excellent option. Fully equipped kitchen, terrace with a view, privacy: the comfort of home in a tropical setting. Many villas have a balcony or terrace where you can enjoy the sunsets.
Our Villas by Bambou offer this package with additional hotel services: dedicated concierge service, private chef available, access to the resort's spa and restaurants. Ideally located in the hills above Anse à l'Âne with panoramic sea views.
Vacation rentals and bed and breakfasts: authentic Creole experience
For an immersion in local culture, Martinique's guesthouses offer a warm welcome and personalized advice from passionate locals. The comfort is simpler, but the human experience is incomparable. The owners are happy to share their favorite places.
This type of accommodation is particularly suitable for solo travelers or adventurous couples looking for authenticity and new encounters.
Airbnb rentals and residences: flexibility and price
Rental platforms allow you to find apartments and houses at various prices. You can also find hotel residences with fully equipped studios. However, be sure to check the exact location and reviews carefully: some listings may be far from beaches or amenities.
Where to stay in Martinique according to your profile
With family and children
Choose establishments offering suitable facilities: swimming pools with shallow areas, family or connecting rooms, proximity to quiet beaches with turquoise waters. Les Trois-Îlets is the best choice thanks to its many activities and services.
At Bambou Resort, children aged 0 to 11 stay and eat for free when sharing their parents' room. We provide all baby equipment free of charge: crib, high chair, stroller, bottle warmer. The pool has a shallow area suitable for small children.
As a couple or on your honeymoon
For a romantic getaway or honeymoon, opt for adults-only establishments or suites with sea views. Le Diamant, with its sunsets over the rock, offers an idyllic setting for lovers.
Our boutique hotel Culture Créole exclusively welcomes guests over the age of 18 in an intimate setting: infinity pool facing the Caribbean Sea, O'Deck gourmet restaurant with table service.
Among friends
The villas with private pools provide a welcoming setting for gatherings. Our three Villas by Bambou can accommodate up to 22 people in total, with the option of organizing memorable evenings thanks to the private chef option.
For hikers
If you are primarily interested in hiking (Mount Pelée, northern trails, Caravelle Nature Reserve), consider spending a few nights in the north near Saint-Pierre or Le Carbet. This will save you time traveling to the trailheads.
For two weeks in Martinique
For a two-week stay, we recommend splitting your trip: one week in the south (Trois-Îlets or Sainte-Anne) for beaches and relaxation, and one week in the north (Saint-Pierre, Le Carbet) for nature, hiking, and discovering Creole culture. You can also choose central accommodation in Trois-Îlets and explore the whole island by car.
Practical tips for choosing the right accommodation
When should I book?
The high season runs from December to April (dry season). Prices increase significantly and the best accommodations must be booked several months in advance, especially for the end-of-year holidays and Carnival (February-March). A word of advice: plan ahead!
The low season (May-November) offers more attractive rates and better value for money, but corresponds to the wet and hurricane season. Tropical showers, which are usually short, do not prevent you from enjoying the island and its beaches.
Budget to be allocated per night
Rates vary considerably depending on the type of accommodation and the season. Expect to pay around €60 to €100 per night for a comfortable bed and breakfast or cottage, €100 to €200 for a 3-star hotel with a swimming pool and beach access, and €200 and above for high-end establishments or villas with private pools.
Should we rent a car?
Renting a car is still pretty much essential for exploring Martinique and getting the most out of your stay. Public transportation is available but limited, especially outside Fort-de-France. Book your vehicle in advance, especially during peak season.
If you are staying in Trois-Îlets, the shuttle boat to Fort-de-France from the pier means you don't need a car for certain day trips. Our concierge service can also organize your activities at no extra charge.
Our resort in Trois-Îlets: your ideal base camp
Since 1960, our family has been welcoming travelers to Anse Mitan beach, in an ideal location facing Fort-de-France Bay. What started out as a small 6-room hotel has grown into a 193-room resort, while retaining its family spirit and authentic Creole character.
The Bambou Resort consists of three complementary entities to satisfy all desires. The Bambou Hotel welcomes families and couples in comfortable bungalows with terraces. The Culture Créole boutique hotel is reserved for adults seeking tranquility, with its infinity pool offering breathtaking views. Our Villas by Bambou offer the privacy of a private home with a swimming pool.
Certified Green Key (the only hotel in the Caribbean to hold this environmental label) and Tourism & Handicaps, our establishment has 22 rooms adapted for people with reduced mobility. Our concierge service organizes your excursions without commission, with advice from passionate locals who know the island like the back of their hand.
